This piece was inspired by a trip I took to Japan to see the Cherry Blossom Festival. The country was essentially raining flowers with ever gust of wind. The flowers landed softly in my hair and washed me away with their natural, simple, elegant beauty.

This piece was painted during a monsoon in Bangkok, Thailand, where I used to live. It was storming outside, yet I felt completely at peace. The experience of making art with the roaring storm as my soundtrack was somehow meditative and peaceful.

A single lined elegant lotus rising up through the rain. The lotus is a cyclical represents of resilience. We all grow, we all transform, we all lose our petals. A lotus can only grow out of the muddy murky water. It’s a symbol that something beautiful, strong and graceful can grow out of something so dark and unclear. In fact, it’s the only way a lotus can grow.

A woman sleeps peacefully as she melts into the mountains, sky and water around her. Her body is part animal, part human, part landscape. She is at peace in nature. She IS nature. Mother Nature. This piece was inspired by and painted in my family’s home in Grass Valley, California, USA. This piece is about the important connection between our human well-being and the well-being of the natural world we live in.

This piece was created for two brothers in Thailand. They were very close, but very different. Together they gave each other balance and seems to complete each other in a way. They put the pieces together as one tree when they live together, and when they live separately, they take their own pieces. The bold expression of family, growth and connection is the heart of this piece.

The two signs I most identify with are air and water. In fact, I’m even named brook which is “a natural, fresh-water stream that is smaller than a river”. This painting is about transformation. About being in two worlds at the same time.

The winds blow through this young woman’s hair and lift her up to the sky. This is a bit of a departure from my more traditional highly colored dense pieces. My intention wasn’t initially to finish it here, but I took a break, and when I returned to my studio I felt that the piece was finished as is. The blank space and raw canvas helps to express the elegance, fragility and effortlessness of the moment.

A naked woman gets all dolled up as she prepares to face the world. This piece represents the performance so many women must do when they leave the comfort of their own spaces and engage with the wold. There is something powerful, yet sacrificial that happens in those moments of performance that this piece captures.

The woman has lost faith in her partner. Her body shows that she’s already started to let go. But she hasn’t left yet. She still holds his arm. But is it to push him away or is it a gentle caress? She asks him to “giver me a reason to believe” in him and their relationship.

This vibrant colorful piece can be hung anyway. I would work on it for a few hours, then rotate the canvas 90 degrees and continue painting. There are a variety of images and shapes that are featured on each side. Some people see storm clouds, a woman’s head and hair from behind, a tree, a wave and more. What you see is up to you.

This is part of a series I did on the end of an deeply important friendship. One of the things that she said to me that really stuck with me in a heart piercing way was that she was so mad that I she “can’t even find sad”. She had put what she called “boundaries” in place to buy her time before she could speak to me. Meanwhile I felt profoundly sad for the loss of our relationship and experienced my grief within her nearly unrecognizable anger, resentment and need for space.
This painting depicts the ugly, complicated, multi-layered nature of the grieving process.
This piece is about those times when we feel alone, blue, sad and isolated. Misunderstood. The lotus represents the beauty and grace in the struggle.
Inspired by Rosie the Riveter, this piece is about fully stepping into your feminine self. It’s a painting that celebrates our collective history of women rising up to claim their power.
A moon ceremony is a powerful experience. An experience of femininity and divinity. It’s messy, it’s hard, it’s a transformational process. This piece shows the vulnerability and strength and ethereal nature of that proces.
